Égyptien copte Os Poupée
Coptic Egyptian, Roman to Byzantine, 3rd-5th century AD

The broad face shows a prominent nose and a slit mouth. The linearly rendered eyebrows and eyes with faint traces of pigment. The hair of the doll is piled up high and combed sideward.
Pierced shoulders for fixation of separate arms.
These figures are often classified as dolls and may have served as inexpensive toys. They were placed in graves and may have also served as votive gifts in the cult of local female deities.

Condition: Reconstituted from two pieces, old restoration with a small infill on the side. Mounted on an acrylic display stand.

Provenance: Ex US private collection M.A., acquired between the 1950s and 1980s. Thence art market California, February 2018 sale.
