ANTONIO VILA ARRUFAT (Sabadell, Barcelona, 1894 – Barcelona, 1989). “Figura reposant”, 1978. The son of Joan Vila i Cinca (also a painter,co-founder of the Academia de Bellas artes de Sabadell), and father of the painter Joan Vila-Grau, Antonio Vila Arrufat was formed mainly with his father and at the School of La Lonja in Barcelona, to finally finish his studies in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes of San Fernando, in Madrid, thanks to a scholarship granted by the municipality of Sabadell. He also made several study trips throughout France and Italy, and on his return he devoted himself mainly to mural painting, especially of religious subject-matters. We can particularly highlight his altar del Santísimo, in the church of the Trinidad, in Vilafranca del Penedés (1935) and those in the Sala de la Ciutat in the Barcelona City Hall (1950), the latter being oil on canvas paintings. He was also an outstanding engraver, and he gave lessons on this discipline at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in Barcelona, where he was appointed teacher later on (1949 – 1958). He was an academic at the royal academies of San Fernando and Sant Jordi, and he exhibited his works in Spain, Italy, France and Argentina. His mature works developed from the 1920s, and they focused on figures and maternities of intimate tone. They are characterized by their sharpness and by the noucentist serenity of their setting. He obtained several awards, including the medal of honour of the Exposición Nacional of Barcelona (1942) and the first engraving medal in the Exposición Nacional of Madrid (1948). Although a certain sector of the critics has linked him to the Noucentisme, and even though he belongs (due to his age) to the 1917 generation, Vila Arrufat was always an independent painter in his work, faithful to his personal temperament, completely timeless. Today he is considered a classic of modernity, he collected the spirit of 19th-century realistic painting and added it to his vision, nuanced by Cubism, Constructivism and the neofigurative currents of the twentieth century.
Throughout his long career he cultivated the figure, still lifes, landscape painting and engraving. He also excelled in mural painting.
From 1919, the year in which he held his first exhibition at the Galeries Laietanes in Barcelona, he presented his work in different Catalan cities, as well as in Madrid and Seville and, outside our borders, in Buenos Aires and Venice, among other cities. Five years before his death, in 1984, the Barcelona City Council dedicated an important anthological exhibition to him. Vila Arrufat developed a career without ups and downs, with a constant stylistic purification, creating serene, balanced and harmonious works, whose craftmanship reflects his artistic personality. His paintings have a deep sensitivity, rich plastic and chromatic values, they are marked by a subtle realism that eliminates all superficiality. Vila Arrufat is currently represented at the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña and at the Abbey of Montserrat, as well as in the Calcografía Nacional.
