Early work from the first active years of Hendrick Goltzius, engraved by him, and for the first time published by Hieronymus Cock (1507-1570). Later by Adriaan Collaert (circa 1560-1618) who took over after the death of Cock.
The engraving is one of the series of the martyrdom of Christ and the twelve apostles.

The signature '.. Goltzius Sculp ' is applied on two prints but he engraved the whole series.
Hendrick Goltzius (Bracht 1558 - Haarlem, 1617) painter, draughtsman, print artist and publisher.
Born in Mullbracht not far from Venlo and Roermond. In 1577 he followed the humanist Dirck Volkertsz Coornhert, with whom he was studying, to Haarlem. In his first years as an artist he was an engraver, first after works of others and then in his own mannerist style, influenced by Bartholomeus Spranger.
