Isaak Beckett (1653-1719) - "The Lady Williams"
gravure - Signée dans la planche - 1680-84

Sheet trimmed within the framing, on laid paper with undecipherable watermark, in very good condition (see photos). Below the image in the middle is the title and, lower, "I. Berckett fe.", left "W. Wissing pinx.", right "E. Cooper ex."
Portrait of a woman in a loose dress with an exposed breast, standing in front of a column and a velvet curtain, leaning against a pedestal; on bottom left, a thistle; on bottom right, a balustrade on which there is a cupid; in the background a large vase and trees.

The identity of the subject is unknown, according to Granger it may be the lover of the Duke of York, the future James II.

Isaak Beckett was an English engraver, along with Robert Williams among the first to practice the technique of aquatint in the country, and therefore to be considered the founder of a school, since before then the engravers dedicated to it were foreign.
