Leonardus Nardus, known as Leo Nardus (The Netherlands, 1868 - La Marsa, Tunisia, 1955).
A multifaceted personality, he was an Olympic fencer, an international chess champion, an Orientalist painter as well as an art merchant, with a singular, adventurous and luxurious life.
Son-in-law of the art dealer Bourgeois, who used to supplied Van Gogh, he became the most skilful and refined forger of the Dutch artist, over time and after the latter’s death.

The work portrays his friend Giulio Tempesti, a well-known film actor and owner of a theatre company of the same name.
The painting was realised in Tunisia and precisely in La Marsa, during one of the last stays of the actor at the residence of his painter friend.
Its execution is museum-like, characterised by skilful, decisive and powerful brushstrokes.
