(*) Albert Oehlen (1954, Krefeld) is one of the central figures in the German contemporary art scene. He graduated from the Higher School of Fine Arts in Hamburg between 1978 and 1981, with Sigmar Polke. He began to create in the bosom of a generation of artists like Kippenberger, Herold or Büttner.
His work is framed within the Neo-Expressionist German movement, called Neue Wilde. His first works are large canvases. In them he exerted a strong social critique. Later he evolved towards abstraction.
Advertising, digital painting and strokes made with fat brush star in the large format works. His works evoke the idea of chaos. His combinations of media and styles result in hybrid paintings presenting an aesthetic protest more than a resolution. In this regard, Albert Oehlen hates to theorize about his work. "There is nothing to decrypt or explain".
