Paintings by Jannes de Vries (1901-1986) are not often seen on the market...........
In 1920 de Vries applied for the normal School for drawing teachers in Amsterdam. He graduated and left for the 'Mecca of Art'. He also travelled to Rome, Florence, and North Africa.
In 1924, Jannes de Vries settled in Groningen and became a member of the famous art circle "De Ploeg".
Around 1930 his realistic painting style came closer to his colleagues from this group, who by now painted with a more moderate palette, which can best be described as 'intensified impressionism'. From 1939 onwards, Jannes Vries used an expressive brush and opted for a brighter colour, although he also made impressionist work in between.
In 1970 the Cultural Prize of the Province of Groningen was awarded to Jannes de Vries. He was also appointed honorary member of ‘De Ploeg’. His works can be found in various private collections and are on display in the Groninger Museum.
He is known in galleries and on the well-known auction-sites.
