Folio: pages [32], 1248, [24]. Frontispiece in red and black with beautiful engraving with allegory of the city of Toulouse engraved in copper by Gaultier. Greek and Latin text.

Scribbles in pen to a few pages at the start (which can surely be erased with nail varnish remover!) but otherwise a really excellent and clean copy, with pretty historiated initials and some woodcuts as well. One page has a small piece lacking (see photo) but otherwise superb. A 400-year old masterpiece.

Eighteenth-century binding in full calf leather with titles on spine, and gilt embellishments. There are some slight abrasions but really pretty and solid.

Rare in this condition. Edited and with commentary by Julius Caesar Scaliger, 1484-1558. First edition thus. The text is in Greek and Latin; commentary in Latin. Scaliger intended to be judged primarily as a philosopher and a man of science and regarded classical studies as a means of relaxation. His scientific writings are all in the form of commentaries. He was a great prevaricator: it was not until he was seventy that he felt that any of them were ready for publication. In 1556 he printed his dialogue on the 'De plantis' attributed to Aristotle; his commentaries on Aristotle's 'History of Animals', he left in a more or less unfinished state, and they were not printed until after his death.

This remains a superb edition, even though it may not have satisfied Scaliger completely. Typography, illustrations (woodcuts), all first rate.
