Alvarez Sala was a disciple of Manuel Ojeda and a student of the Superior School of Fine Arts. He made himself known by attending the National Exhibitions held in Madrid. In 1892 he presented his painting Naufragio en las costas de Gijón; in 1895 he gets an honourable mention for his self-portrait En el estudio; In 1897, he wins the third medal for his work, ¡Todo a babor!; in 1899 he wins also the third medal for his work La rifa de la ternera, and his painting El contraste is proposed for a decoration in that of 1901. He also collaborated as an illustrator in the magazine Blanco y Negro.
Modern Art until 1932, the year in which it was sent to the Provincial Council of Oviedo for storage, and can now be seen in the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias. With paintings of Asturian themes, he attends the national exhibitions of 1906, 1908 (in which his canvas Emigrantes is second medal) 1910, also second medal with Asturias, 1912 and 1915, in which he is awarded first medal for Ganarás el pan.
