I am offering for auction a superb 19th century watercolour and pencil with scratching out of a coastal scene with shipping, by celebrated artist Charles Bentley, 1806-1854. Signed C Bentley bottom right.

Condition. In good order. Please view all images for condition. Later frame has some wear. Ready to hang.
Provenance: With David Messum Fine Art, London.
A marine artist who was apprenticed to the engraver Theodore Fielding. He started engraving on his own behalf on the termination of his apprenticeship in 1827, & for some years combined engraving with watercolour painting. He was elected Associate member of the Old Watercolour Society in 1834 & a full member of the Old Watercolour Society in 1843. Examples are in the British museum; Victoria & Albert Museum & elsewhere. Lifelong friend of William Callow. Charles Bentley died of Cholera in 1854 leaving a widow.
