Description
Studio Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters - Thomas Eyck - Vase (1) - Withering Tableware
Pays-Bas - 2000 à aujourd'hui - Porcelaine

In 2014 Studio Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters designed a series of dinnerware titled 'Withering Tableware' for Thomas Eyck which were produced by the Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum (est. 1572). Traditionally, paintwork on delicate porcelain is applied by hand, making it a labour-intensive and therefore valuable trade. Maarten Kolk and Guus Kusters developed recipes for glazes whereby craftsmen didn't paint directly on the porcelain but rather on the mould prior to the casting of the product. In this way multiple copies of one depiction could be made. After every casting the glaze would wash and crumble away further, which forms a clear parallel with withering flowers found in nature. The image of the flower is clear and sharp after the first casting, after which it withers and fades with successive reproductions. With this collection Studio Maarten Kolk and Guus Kusters bring a new balance between nature and production culture, whereby the beauty of both worlds are being emphasised.

This dish is adopted in the permanent collections of the Design Museum Den Bosch, among others.
