The Series E 94 locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB), were designed by AEG and in the operating livery of the early 1940s. Due to its design the Series E 94 was also referred to as the "Crocodile" or "Eisenschwein", and appeared in 1940 and was intended for heavy freight trains and passenger transport. After the war, an additional number of these units were built, which, together with the older E 94s were used in East and West Germany and Austria until the 1990s.
The BR194/E94, also known as "German Crocodile", was built during the period 1940-1945 by the companies AEG, SSW and Kraus-Maffei. These BR194/E94s were built especially for heavy freight transport, but were also regularly used for passenger trains. 146 of these locomotives were delivered until 1945. The locomotives reached a top speed between 90 - 100 km/h. (When hauling up to 2.000 tons the locomotive could still reach a top speed of approx. 85 km/h). After the Second World War, some more locomotives were delivered and the locomotives of the E94 were apportioned between East- and West-Germany and Austria. Most of these locomotives went to the DB. The DR had a total of 30 units and the Austrian ÖBB had 44 units. During the period 1954-1956, another series of 43 units of the Series E94 locomotives were built and delivered. During the 1960s, the roofs were lengthened and the adapted locomotives then continued as the Series E194. The reason for lengthening the roof lay in the fact that the train drivers encountered much hindrance from the sun. In 1988, the last BR 194/E94 was taken out of service at the DB, in 1991 the last in the GDR, and in 1995 the last one at the ÖBB (Rh 1020).
