This figurine seated on a stool is a soothsayer in the Baule community.
This beautiful figurine of the Baule tribe is a rare beautiful specimen. Observe the detailed hairstyle. The sharply carved beard along the face turns into a long beard in the three parts and goes until the stomach. The back and the stool are nicely decorated. Beautiful shiny brown patina. 49 cm tall.
The Baoulé believe in a creator god (Nyamian), elusive and inaccessible. The God of the Earth (Assie) controls humans and animals. Spirits or Amuen are endowed with supernatural powers. The real world is the opposite of the spiritual World (Blôlô) from which souls come at birth and where they return to their dead. Religion is based on the idea of death and immortality of the soul. Baoulé are traditionally animist.
