Lotus feet (also known as: Golden lotus) refers to the binding and misformation of women's feet, a practice from ancient China which is called foot binding.
These unique shoes were used for the minuscule feet. These shoes were made to honour the beautiful, aesthetically formed feet. A lotus foot was irresistible to Chinese men and lotus shoes completed the picture.
The shoes are made of expensive fabric such as silk and satin, and they were beautifully embroidered with chinoiserie. Some had a small feel, but generally they were flat. Lotus shoes are highly south-after and very valuable. In theatres that only had male actors specials shoes were created for men. They were actually tip-toeing on supports, which made it appear as if they also had lotus feet. They trained for hours and hours, from early morning until the evening, by standing on bricks they sought their balance to stand on the wooden supports.
