He was best known for his farmer interiors in the The Hague and Laren School styles.
Bernard de Hoog lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1899. The typical themes of the Laren School, especially the farmer interiors, would be a defining feature of his works even after his departure from Laren. He often painted mothers and their children. His style was strongly influenced by the The Hague style painters Jozef Israëls and Albert Neuhuys, as well as Hein Kever.
Apart from interiors, De Hoog also painted portraits, genre pieces, landscapes and flower still lifes. He also painted light watercolours. His works were very popular in the USA, Canada and England, where he regularly held exhibitions and sold many works. He died in 1943 at 77 years old.
Museums: inter alia Rijksmuseum, van Bilderbeek-Lamaison in Dordrecht.
