The 'Master of the unfinished' was the title of the necrology that was featured in the Haarlems Dagblad after the death of the painter. This time, Santen did complete the painting and that has everything to do with the destination of the canvas. The portrait was intended for an exhibition in the Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem. On the back, there is a reference to an exhibition and/or purchase of the Frans Halsmuseum. (Clearly legible in the date 28 May 1955*). The portrait clearly shows the influence of the painter H.F. Boot on work by Santen.
