About the painter: Wilhelm Gdanietz was deaf due to scarlet fever at the age of two, so he attended the deaf-mute institution in Osnabrück from 1902 to 1908. Between 1911 and 1918 he studied at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts under Claus Meyer (1856 - 1919), Eduard von Gebhardt (1838 - 1925) and Wilhelm Spatz (1861 - 1931), as well as in the master studio of Franz Kiederich (1873 - 1950). . At first, he painted motifs from South Tyrol and Austria, which he found during his travels through the Alps. Later, Gdanietz ran a studio in Volendam, Holland, where he painted numerous of his motifs, especially Dutch genre and interior paintings, which now make up the bulk of his more than 1000 paintings. With the construction of the dyke on the Zuiderzee, fishing villages disappeared and tranquility and idyll were lost, so the artist gave up his studio in Volendam in 1930 and retired to Dusseldorf. There, he remained faithful to his Dutch motifs, even furnished his apartment in the style of a Dutch fishing hut.
