Paul Snoek was the pseudonym of Edmond André Coralie Schietekat (Sint-Niklaas, 17 December 1933 - Tielt, 19 October 1981). He was one of the most famous poets of Belgium. He was also an author and painter. His pseudonym comes from the name of his mother Paula Snoeck.
Paul Snoek is counted among the ‘Vijfenvijftigers’, a group of experimental poets of mainly Flemish origin grouped around Gard Sivik, such as Gust Gils and Hugues C. Pernath, who all started publishing before 1955. This generation of poets was a reaction to the predominantly Dutch 50s, including Lucebert, Gerrit Kouwenaar, Jan Elburg, Remco Campert, Simon Vinkenoog, Hans Andreus, and Hugo Claus.
His work is difficult to place in one movement, or to mention with one common denominator. Started as a romantic poet, he evolved into more aggressive and cynical writings. At last he became a non-inspired pessimistic poet, in accordance with his manic-depressive moods.
