Freek van der Berg - Meisje in groene jurk

Freek van der Berg - Meisje in groene jurk
Huile sur toile - Signé à la main

As an autodidact, Freek van den Berg was able to go a long way. He was even referred to as “Kees van Dongen van Kattenburg”. (Pieter Scheen / Lexicon van Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1850-1950, 1970). The similarities are clear: the colourfulness of their work, the great preference for depicting women, the fast and accurate way of painting, etc. That's not surprising, since Van Dongen discovered and helped him on his way at the age of 19 as a born talent. From 1954-1963 he also worked as an art critic for various national newspapers.
For years Van den Berg worked from Amsterdam. In 1985 he moved to the IJssel village Veessen in Veluwe. The direct view of the river and especially the sunrises influenced his work. His colours became lighter in tone, "brighter, as if the sun had the more chance to assert itself" (necrology in Zwolse Courant, 15-06-2000).
