Rare Mahongwe masks are closely linked to the existence of own initiatory companies Mahongwé people but also to their neighbors Kinabalu. The use of masks is limited to the company reserved for diviners.
It occurs during initiation rites in which the uninitiated, parents of a soothsayer deceased, include in turn the secret society. Perceived as the embodiment of the spirit of divination, the mask can be seen only by insiders during a night ceremony.
