Arma was educated, until the late 1970s, at Artibus, Utrecht school of arts. He makes gouaches, oil paintings, graphics, etchings and sculptures: bronze, ceramic and glass objects. His early sculptures are robust, his later works are much more slender. Asia plays an important role in his work. For seventeen years he collaborated with the Japanese artist Jiro Inagaki in the Netherlands and in Japan. In his paintings he is inspired by his trips to Japan, India, Nepal, and other countries in Asia and in 2008 by his trip to Spitsbergen.
In 2007 Arma was elected as artist of the year in the Netherlands. Since 1986 Ad Arma and Peer van Eden form the artist-duo A.P. Compaan.
