A moku-gyo is a buddhist wooden bell, which is hit with a drumstick by who prays in an attempt to drive Buddha's attention.

Moku-gyo means litterally wood-fish, as the bell has always been made as a fish coiled on itself or by elements of a fish (two opposite heads). Why a fish ? because a fish is an animal that never sleeps and stays awake day and night ; likewise the buddhist, when hearing the sound of the moku-gyo, is reminded that as to receive all the benefits from the religion, he must always be with an alert spirit and a good body energy, like the fish.

As the fish is destined to become a dragon in his future life, he who folllows buddhist gospel assiduously and with perseverance will become a wise man in his next existence.

On this specific netsuke, the fish is already transformed into a dragon (see the head), coiled on itself. The wood is very nicely carved, with nice details on the head, and precise definition of the scales.
