Kagami-buta is a special category of netsuke. It is made of a small flat bowl in ivory, wood, metal etc…in which is embeded as a lid a metal plate decorated with etching, chiseling, etc..
The string linking the kagami-buta to the sagemono through the ojime does not go through a traditional himmotoshi but goes through a single hole drilled in the center of the bowl and is tied inside the kagami-buta to the metal plate.
Here, the bowl is made of lacquered bone and the metal plate decorated by a character and a fox dressed as a priest.
The character is most probably the Ra-kan Ki-ya-ta-ka-has-sha Son-ja, identifiable by the large fly-whisk he holds in his right hand.
Ra-kan (or arhat) a perfect saints, worthy of becoming accomplished buddhas. They are not yet buddhas, just men who have reached such a level on the path of the buddhist enlightment that they no longer need to be reborn as human beings, ready to become actual buddhas.
Part of the original string is persent ( but separate as seen on picture ) as the wood ojime, bearing a character carved on each side.
On one side the character holds a fan, on the other someting that resembles a mallet.. maybe sketches of Ju-rô-jin (the fan) and Dai-koku (the mallet), two of the seven gods of good fortune (Shichi Foku-jin).
Very good condition for its age. Minor scratch under the netsuke.
