Wooden mortar/storage container,
Chokwe, D.R. Congo/Zaire.
Composed of 2 parts – the bottom part is a richly carved mortar/storage section, above is a lid in the form of a Chibinda Ilunga figure of the Chokwe.
The Chibinda Ilunga figure, with its enlarged muscles and for the most part, its curved features, is typical of the Chokwe style. Such idealised depictions of ancestors and important historical figures were created by professional artists and promoted the chief’s standing. The muscular body and huge hands radiate power. The curved, richly decorated headdress identify him as a chief. In his hands, he is holding a container, which may represent the contents found in the lower container.
Good condition for its age. There are some stress cracks, but these have no impact on the appearance of the sculpture.
