A Belgian painter, who is best known for his paintings of animals and landscapes. He also used the alias ‘Joseph Klaas’. He was educated at the Academy of Brussels (1876-1881). He was strongly influenced by animal painter Alfred Verwee.
He was foremost a good realistic animal painter: cows, sheep, horses, henhouses and animals in farm yards. Though he also painted farmers and shepherds in their surroundings, a hunter with dogs, a drinking horse salesman or a milk farmer’s wife with dog cart. He also painted a few still-lifes with flowers or poultry and fruit, or a still-life with fish and shrimp.
