Very Large and Fine Provenance Thangka - China/Tibet - 19th Century

Provenance: by repute from a Northern European ambassador to China before 1939 and then acquired by a European Royal member. Ex London art market.

This lot comes from the private collection of Mr. J. Bahamonde who over a period of 20 years acquired his collection from various prestigious dealers and has now decided to downsize his beloved collection. His degree in archaeology from one of the best British universities and passion for art is reflected in this beautiful painting.


Colour and gilt pigments on cloth with Shakyamuni seated in padmasana on a lotus throne, his hands performing the in bhumisparsa and dhyana mudra, all before alms bowls variously overflowing with jewels, fruit and flowers, all set against a Tibeto-Chinese style mountainous landscape dotted with excerpts from the Jataka tales, including scenes of practitioners and ethereal figures, all beside white squares for the descriptions.


Size: 131 x 123 cm.


Condition: Good overall with much of the original pigments; as expected with age and use related wear including toning, stains, losses, creases and repairs.
