‘Plaatsen van herinnering’:
The interesting concept of bundling is a quest for crucial places, for places where history literally was made and where our country derives its identity or collective memory from. Specialists describe in only fifteen pages what the meaning of this place is: what happened when, why should we remember these events and how has that memory changed over the years? It is a fascinating concept that is borrowed from the French historian Pierre Nora, though has been executed with an own Dutch discipline.

The Dutch editors have clearly decided to stick closely to a physical identifiable place: a building, field, village or road. The biggest advantage of this is the historical tangibility: a reader can simply travel to the place and take a look for him/herself, to breath-in history as it were, to touch it and perhaps even experience it. 'Plaatsen van herinnering' lets itself be used as a travel guide through the past, a guide for those historically interested, who wants to dwell where it happened. Renowned scientists take you by the hand:

1*
Elaborate archaeological research and a thorough new study of sources in the last decades have enlarged and deepened our knowledge of Holland’s history. Scientist in the fields of history, art, culture and societal history have bundled their findings in this well designed book. They describe the history of the current provinces of Zuid-Holland and Noord-Holland starting in prehistory where grave finds are an important source up till 1572. The landscape and urban developments are described in eight chapters. A lot of attention is given to the influence of the administrators from earlship as well as to trade and economy, language, art and culture in the mentioned period.

2*
The history of Holland during the period of the Republic is described in this sizeable book. Scientists of various disciplines have given their contributions after thorough research. Central is the role of the region of Holland in the Republic in terms of politics, social and economic relevance, religion and culture. Also a lot of attention for the relations between ‘Stadhouders’ and the ‘Staten’ in the described period. The authors prove which internal and external factors contributed to make the 17th century the Golden Age. Literature, the art of painting, music and architecture, and the function for the citizens are discussed in separate chapters.

3a* - 3b*
Volume three deals with the history of the current provinces of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland covering the period since the French period up till 2000. The book crosses the borders of 2000 a few times. The reading material is distributed over two books. The books are similarly organised as the previously published volumes. The changing political situation and developments in Holland are described. One chapter is dedicated at the battle with water. Also explained is that Holland derives a big part of its economical strength from that same sea, rivers, channels and polders. The rise of industry resulted in urbanisation and attracted manpower from other sources. Each chapter has intermezzos related to the topic. The chapters end with a summary or conclusion.

These wonderfully readable (history) books with text in two columns are colourfully illustrated with maps and photos. They are provided with notes and an elaborate bibliography.
